The Geelong Law Association would like to extend their congratulations to Elsie Stokie of Barwon Community Legal Service on being awarded the 2015 LIV Community Lawyer of the Year award.
Ms Stokie was presented her award in front of friends and colleagues at the presentation ceremony and dinner on 15th of May 2015.
The award recognises Ms Stokie’s continued hard work and dedication to BCLS after establishing the then Geelong Community Legal Service and working as its first employee in 1986. Ms Stokie has been integral to the promotion and expansion of the BCLS and her work in education and litigation continues to benefit the Geelong community and their access to legal services.
Firstly, I would like to wish you all a belated happy new year.
By way of update since my last President's Report, the following has occurred
On Friday 24 October 2014, in collaboration with Deakin University, our Association held our annual Deakin Day. Thank you to all the members who supported the day which enables members to obtain CPD points without cost. This has proved to be a valuable initiative for our members and we will continue to provide free CPD not only at the end of each month but also on the last Friday in October of each year.
It is of particular note that the three compulsory morning sessions are well attended. The afternoon sessions are often poorly attended and as a committee we will look at different ways to provide substantive law CPD to our members. As a committee we are always looking to members to provide their feedback about these events and look forward to receiving any comments you may have as to how we can improve Deakin Day or alternatively provide topics which you would like us to address in 2015.
A very big thank you to Foleys List who supported us again in 2014. We hope that the support from Foleys for Deakin Day and for CPD throughout the year will continue throughout 2015 and beyond
OPENING OF THE 2015 LEGAL YEAR
The Honourable Justice Croft again opened our legal year on Monday 12 January 2015. The The Parish of Christ Church Anglican Geelong on the corner of Moorabool and McKillop Streets in Geelong held the Service followed by the Ceremonial Opening at the Magistrates' Court of Victoria at Geelong. As usual a morning tea followed in the Jury Pool Room. The Reverend Russell Trickey prepared a fitting service and ensured that a number of clergy from different denominations were present. The association made a donation to Reverend Trickey in thanks for his support and to assist his church in the valuable work they do in our community.
The Honourable Justice Osborne of the Court of Appeal represented the Chief Justice and His Honour Judge Mullaly was also in attendance. Chief Magistrate Lauritsen also attended along with local members of Parliament.
Thank you to all who attended and make it a very special event.
A big thank you must go to Helen Buchan for organising our annual dinner. This year we had 105 in attendance for what was a great night.
Katie Miller, the incoming President of the Law Institute of Victoria was present at our dinner and as a supporter of country and suburban Law Associations. Katie is particularly impressed by the vibrancy of the Law Association and its members in Geelong.
A big thank you must also go to Foley's who provided a donation to our Law Association which assists in meeting the cost of the dinner and enable us to provide discounted ticket prices to our members.
FAMILY LAW CPD
An email will be forwarded shortly to all our family lawyers who are members of the Association. It is proposed that a CPD lunch will be facilitated by Step by Step for Separated Families to discuss family therapeutic counselling services.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Please save the date for our AGM which will be free of charge to all members. The AGM will be held on Friday 27 March 2015 at Empire Grill and Father Dillon will be our guest speaker.
